Bangalore: Toyota's production woes are finally over and the car maker has restarted operations in its Karnataka plant starting Tuesday. The shutters of Toyota Kirloskar Motors' Karnataka plant are finally open after a 37-day long hiatus. It all started on March 16 when the company responded to an alleged internal strike by some workmen and announced a lockout. In response, when the co reopened gates at the plant all of its 4500 workmen called for a strike, citing disagreement over wage hikes. But now, a month later, the co is back on its toes after the state labour department's intervention. And has also made headway as far as wage hikes go.
Shekar Viswanathan, Vice Chairman, Toyota Kirloskar Motors said, "There also we have an agreement on the number. It's now up to the court to adjudicate on the matter. If the employees agree we can go to the court and say this is the number we have settled on. And we have settled on that number which is Rs 3100 increment per month on an average."
The plant's annual production cap is 3,10,000 cars and Toyota manufactures Etios, Liva, Corolla, Camry regular, Camry Hybrid, Innova and Fortuner in this plant. So this shut down meant a 50 per cent drop in its daily production numbers of nearly 600 cars per day. But now with the operations back on track Toyota is confident of gaining ground soon.
Shekhar Vishwanathan said that order back log is about 1 month to 40 days. Depending on the kind of models we are producing so to give you a number, maybe it is about 10000 plus. We remain confident that this order backlog will be met as soon as possible to keep the consumer satisfied.
It might still be the very first day of resuming the operations after a long break. But Toyota has already recorded a 78 per cent attendance and expects this to climb up to over 95 per cent over the next few days. And the car maker says it is confident that the dark days are certainly behind.
