In a jolt to the Naxalites in Andhra Pradesh, state Secretary of CPI-M Madhav was killed in a shootout.

Hyderabad: In a jolt to the Naxalites in Andhra Pradesh, the state secretary of CPI-M, Madhav, along with seven others was killed in a shootout with police in Nalamala forest of Prakasam district Sunday.

The shootout took place near Barabayalupenta village in the thick forest area, about 300 kilometres from Hyderabad, when special teams of Grey Hounds, the anti-Naxalite wing of the state police, surrounded a Maoist hideout, police said.

Acting on a tip-off that Maoists were holding a key meeting, police teams from four districts zeroed in on the place.

In a gunbattle that brokeout, eight Naxalites, including five women, were killed while others managed to escape, police said.

Around 35 Maoists, including some important leaders, were believed to have been present at the meeting when the policemen cornered them.

The killing of Madhav, is a major setback to Naxalites who have been at the receiving end of the police offensive.

He was a key military strategist of Maoist outfit responsible for several operations including the abortive bid on the life of former chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu nearly three years ago.
