PUDUCHERRY: The Puducherry unit of the Bharathiya Janata Party (BJP) , on Tuesday, urged the administration to come forward to run the distilleries as well as the retail liquor shops as it could earn adequate revenue, obviating the need to enhance the VAT.Addressing a press conference, BJP state president SPK Dhamodhar said that the Puducherry administration was only getting `18 crore from the 400 liquor shops presently and another `350 crore from the distilleriesDemanding that the administration  withdraw the enhanced Value Added Tax in the  union territory, he said that people used to come to Puducherry to make purchases because of the low cost and added that the volume of business was more, which benefited traders as well as fetched revenue to the government. But now the situation had changed because of the price rise which in turn affected the tourism sector also. Nobody could deny that the government needed revenue to implement schemes here, he said,  and suggested  that  Puducherry follow Tamil Nadu in  liquor sale. The government there is  earning a revenue of `17,000 crore from the liquor sector and Puducherry should  follow suit, he said.
