CHENNAI: A year after it was inaugurated by then Chief Minister M Karunanidhi, the administrative building of Queen Mary’s College, eponymously named Kalaignar Maligai, seems to have been renamed. Following the change in regime, the last two Tamil letters of the building’s name have been removed, giving it the new name of Kalai Maaligai (Palace of Arts). Interestingly, the college authorities claim ignorance as to how this happened and say they noticed the change only two days ago.For at least a week now, the 97-year-old college’s new administrative building, facing the Marina, has earned the curious stares of regular passersby. ‘’More than a week ago, I noticed that the name of the college’s new building had been cleverly changed by the removal of the last two letters,” said Bharath, who jogs along the Marina every morning. But college authorities claim that it was a more recent development. ‘’We did not do it, nor do we know who has removed the last two letters of the building’s name. We noticed it only a couple of days ago,” said Dr K R Seethalakshmi, Principal-in-charge of the college, speaking to Express. The college building’s name seems to have changed sometime before CM J Jayalalithaa’s visit on Friday when she stopped by at the college on her way to the old Secretariat and met with students and staff. It may be recalled that the college was in the eye of a storm in 2003, as the then AIADMK government had proposed to build the new secretariat in its place. The DMK had opposed the move and voiced its support for the historic college.
