CHENNAI: More than 40,000 teachers from across the state will soon be involved in a massive exercise to re-examine textbooks for classes I-VIII under the Uniform School Education Syllabus. This is the second such exercise undertaken by the Directorate of Teacher Education Research and Training (DTERT) to make textbooks for next year error-free and comprehensive.Students of Matriculation, Oriental, Anglo-Indian and Government schools in the state have for the first time been brought under the same syllabus this year, with the full implementation of the Uniform School Education System. From the next year, the Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation System will be implemented in the state for classes I-VIII, for which the textbooks are being re-analysed. “This exercise has given teachers the opportunity to share knowledge amongst themselves and understand the new syllabus better,” said K Devarajan, director of DTERT, speaking to Express. A report compiling the suggestions of these teachers will be ready in a week’s time, after which they will be checked by a chairperson appointed for every subject.“Following that, the second scrutiny by another lot of 40,000 teachers will be undertaken. Suggestions from them will also be considered, and orders given for textbook printing by January 15,” the official said. Also, a report has been submitted by the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan project officials, on what activities can be included to make the syllabus easily comprehensible. “More word games and puzzles will be introduced in all the subjects, as per their recommendations, submitted after a Cluster Resource Centre Workshop,” an official revealed. Two other committees have also been working simultaneously towards improvement of textbooks. While one is assessing what portions can be included, another is working on dividing the syllabus into three, to suit the trimester pattern. To prepare teachers to implement the CCE system, intensive training will be imparted in April-May.
