One of the few reasons to love the summer months is the availability of the King of fruits, Mango. One special mango from the state of Kerala is considered one of the best varieties of the fruit.
Local18 reports exclusively that the sweet fruit is found in the district of Kannur in the region of Kuttiattoor village. Named after its place of origin, the fruit is simply called Kuttiattoor mango. If we go by the reports, the mango is famous for its “unparalleled sweetness and unique flavour”. Possessing such qualities, the mango naturally gained a place in the hearts of the locals as well as the state’s agricultural heritage.
The Kuttiattoor mango is the first mango from Kerala to be given a Geographical Indication (GI) tag which it got in 2021. A GI tag is a type of mark, given to those products which have a specific geographical origin and its qualities or properties are limited to that region only. This recognition is considered to be a big achievement for a regional fruit, cementing it as one of the highest-quality fruits in India. Furthermore, the GI tag for the Kuttiattoor mango is deemed as a celebration of the ancient mango cultivation in the area.
The village of Kuttiattoor is popular in the state for its rich mango orchards. As per reports, they offer a variety of mangoes here like Nambiar Mango, Kannapuram Mango, Kunjimangalam Mango and Vadakkumbhagam Mango.
To get the Kuttiattoor mango the tag of GI, the farmers embarked on a journey of dedication and hard work. Their commitment to preserving the indigenous varieties of the fruit grown in the region is a tale of inspiration, especially, with the challenges brought by modern farming techniques and climate change.
Some of the other varieties of mangoes that have got GI tag are Alphonso (Hapus) Mango, hailing from Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg, and other regions of Maharashtra, Gir Kesar Mango, from the Junagadh and Amreli districts of Gujarat and Malihabadi Dussehri Mango, originating from Malihabad in Uttar Pradesh.
