The clock tower is an iconic part of the Mysore University campus.

Mysuru’s Manasagangotri has a landmark, a centenary 70-foot clock tower, whose hourly chimes will instantly remind one of London’s Big Ben. This important tower is constructed in the University of Mysuru (UoM) in front of the canteen. During its construction, specially made clocks by the State-owned HMT were installed on the four sides of the tower. This clock tower has been the centre of attention not just for the locals but for tourists as well.

Mysuru is a culturally rich city whose heritage has often attracted tourists from around the country. The same is reflected in the huge and attractive campus of the Mysore University campus. The clock tower has been recognised as an iconic part of the campus. Interestingly, it is inspired by London’s Big Ben.

This 70-foot-tall clock tower is quite a crowd-puller due to its charm. The bell chimes every hour and throughout the campus it echoes and everyone can check the time. This clock tower was built during the time of Rangappa who was the chairman of Mysore University then. This clock tower on the campus is visible even from afar. The college campus is also like a centre point and quickly became a photoshoot point for many.

When the clock tower was installed, it had clocks on four sides of the tower so that everyone could check the time. It had Kannada, English and Roman numerals on it. It runs on solar power as well as battery. The hour chime was generally heard from 5 am to 11 pm and was silenced at night to prevent students in the hostel and the public from getting disturbed. A barricade was also built around the tower with a garden and a water fountain with colourful lights. To make it visitor-friendly, more than 10 granite benches were installed so that people could sit and spend time there. At night, the clock is visible from the Chamundi Hill.
