PUDUCHERRY: Handling the bundle in their arms with utmost care, the men in khaki presented an incongruous sight. For, inside the bundle was the infant that was stolen from JIPMER on Friday night. And certainly nobody would begrudge them the good press that they got. Definitely not Maheswari, mother of the infant, who could barely control her emotions. As the senior superintendent of police V J Chandran formally handed over to her the baby recovered from the Chennai woman, she thanked him profusely and repeatedly. Her husband Lakshmanan even prostrated before the SSP, in spite of being asked not to do so.Asked whether investigations would continue in the case, the SSP said that a case had been already registered and the law would take its course.Chandran, pointing to the vital clues given by the driver of the car, said that the public should come out without hesitation and help police to nab the culprits. The SSP revealed that the police had suggested to the JIPMER authorities to introduce a token system to avoid a repeat of such unhappy incidents in the future.He also suggested that some kind of verification system be put in place when a newborn and its parents were discharged from JIPMER.JIPMER director Dr K S V K Subba Rao had already said that his hospital was mulling tagging of the newborns and their mothers with unique radio frequency IDs.
