THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:  The work of Thakaraparambu flyover is likely to begin in February. With the TRIDA bus-stand-cum-shopping-complex project to come up on the compound of Government Central School Attakulangara getting government approval, it has a opened a path for the rehabilitation of 56 traders which remained a stumbling block for the work on the flyover. V S Sivakumar MLA the other day had said that the works of Thakaraparambu flyover will begin in February. Project director of City Roads Improvement Project (CRIP) Anil Kumar Pandala said that steps must be taken to initiate works by January. “If the works begin in January, then a six-month period would be available at a stretch without any interruption,” he said.It will take almost two years to complete the flyover, the second to come up under the CRIP after the Bakery Junction flyover. Just like the flyover at Bakery Junction, the Thakaraparambu flyover too is of 510-metre length. The statistics of both the flyovers are the same. Both are full-length grade separators. There will be 13 piers. The width of the flyover will be 12 metres. It will be three-lane bi-directional road.Thakaraparambu flyover will be part of the first Intermediate Ring Road which passes through Vellayambalam junction, Thycaud, Choorakattupalayam, Power House Road (access to the southern opening of the Railway Station), Thakaraparambu Road, Vazhapalli, Kavadi Road, Pettah, Naalumukku, Kannammoola, Law College, PMG, LMS and Museum Junction. The Thakaraparambu flyover, along with the Palayam Underpass, are the major components of the road network development in the city for ensuring efficient and uninterrupted flow of traffic along the M G Road. The flyover at Thakaraparambu was suggested by an expert committee headed by Dr N S Sreenivasan after a series of studies in 2002.Temporary rehabilitation of traders will be arranged near the Central theatre. They will be later replaced to the proposed shopping complex in Attakulangara. The TRIDA project for the renovation of East Fort would take around one year.
