CHENNAI: It won’t be very long before examinations are done away with in state board schools, what with the Union Human Resources Development Ministry’s dictat to the effect. A Continuous Comprehensive Evaluation (CCE) system would take shape in its place. But to achieve that, the evaluators (read teachers) should be well equipped to handle the new system. And with that point in mind, the English Language Teachers’ Association, an international organisation, conducted a workshop recently to train teachers of schools and colleges in the State in the new method of evaluation. In course of the two-day programme, which was attended by at least 40 teachers from various institutions, several myths about the CCE were dispelled. It helped remove the misunderstanding that the CCE requires the teachers to give continuous tests to the students.Sudha Ravi, an education consultant and a former principal, who was the resource person at the workshop, highlighted the purpose of the CCE and how it catered to the wholesome development of the child till the time the child left the school. She insisted on CCE being an integral part of everyday study and stated that it should not be misunderstood as being a separate task. The purpose of the workshop was to create resource persons who would be able to disseminate knowledge about CCE across the board. CCE, the workshop stressed, did not cater to just the academic front but to life skills as well. “In European and American schools, a child learns a lot because of the system they follow,” said N Bindu, an assistant professor with a college in Thiruttani. Prof Elango of the English Department, MIT, organised the event that was held in Children’s Garden School, Mylapore.
