NEW DELHI: The Home Ministry has slammed Odisha Government for inaction in tackling Maoist menace in the state. In an advisory letter to the state, based on the Intelligence report about rising activities of red terror, the ministry has asked the Odisha government to rework on the strategy to deal with rising Naxalism in the state."It is pertinent to mention that Odisha is the only state of India where activities of CPI (Maoists) are spreading to new areas at an alarming rate without requisite counter-measures by the state government," the ministry said in its advisory.Sources in the ministry said a large group of Maoists are making Odisha-Chhattisgarh border as their base. "The Jhina Hikaka and two Italians hostage crisis have given the Maoists enough time to regroup and consolidate their strength. State failed to check it and did nothing substantial," the sources added. The advisory also suggested that the State Government may launch anti-Naxal operation backed by intelligence input to prevent the CPI (Maoists) from capitalising on the circumstances arising out of the recent developments. The ministry also cited several instances of Naxal violence and the state government failure to check the menace despite having a strong presence of Central paramilitary forces."In the wake of the recent abductions by Maoists, anti-Naxal operations have remained suspended in Maoist strongholds in southern districts and are yet to be resumed even after the release of the hostages. Due to lack of operations by security forces, Naxals are reported to have decided to exploit the circumstances to further consolidate their influence and spread across several districts,” the advisory added.
