KOCHI: Dhun, the Mehfil Night by ghazal maestro Talat Azis was a different experience for music buffs gathered at the JTPac. The Kirana Gharana-based rendition of Talat Aziz and the perfect acoustics of the theatre were soothing to the senses.The Mehfil mood was created by the seductive Bansuri notes from Ninad Mulaokar and the singer chose one of his favourites, Rajni, through which he marked his identity. Another piece ‘Rafta Rafta’ presented in a slow pace was enriched by Rasheed Khan’s violin and Jitendra Kathak’s tabla tones. ‘Hamare Dil Se Mat Khelo’, the much sought after ghazal of Talat, was rendered after repeated requests from the audience.This was followed by the evergreen number of his renowned guru Mehdi Hassan. This all-time hit which began with the meaningful lines ‘Ranjish Hi Sahi’ was dedicated to his master with love and affection. By absorbing the unique singing style of Mehdi Hassan, his pet disciple once again recreated the heavenly musical moments of that immortal ghazal.In his inimitable style Talat presented his favourite song ‘Zindagi Jati Teri Baism Mei’ from the film ‘Umrao Jaan’. He deviated from the film traditions by improvising on it. Jitu created a nostalgic mood with his tabla. Rashid Khan gave a dazzling tonal support on the violin.The song from his famous Album, Irshad, was well received with thunderous applause. The famous ghazal ‘Khubsoorath Hai Aamkhein’ evoked different feelings through his striking voice modulations.Ninad gave remarkable tonal support on the flute. “I am trying to present a new Khubsoorat by exploring the possibilities of improvisations,” Talat said as he sang ‘Mei to Yaadom’ and ‘Poochenge Hava Se’ which were received well by the listeners. Singing the immortal lines from the ghazal, ‘Teri Vahi Shaam’, of Talat Mahamood, the singer paid rich tributes to the great trend setter of the 1960s and 1970s. Talat also sang the songs requested by the audience.‘Ainaa Mujh Se Meri’ from the film ‘Daddy’, directed by Mahesh Bhat, was a milestone in Talat’s career. Rajendra Kathak added a perfect tonal support on his key board. ‘Ainaa Mujh’ was the concluding piece of the nearly three-hour long Mehfil evening which left Talat’s music lingering in the air.
