CHENNAI: Many years ago, when Sushi was introduced to the Indian palate, the very thought of eating raw fish would have made us a little uncomfortable. But now, Sushi has become quite a hit among food lovers, stressed Ashok, Business Manager, Teppan at Benjarong, at the inaugural of the Sushi Yaki festival. “The reason why people are loving Sushi is because of the changing lifestyle. More and more people are now becoming health conscious, they are concerned about their diet and Sushi helps them get their less-fattening and good-for-health meals in place,” he adds. What’s unique about this year’s food festival, is that, it is also about Yaki and not Sushi. While Sushi, is sticky rice cooked in vinegar topped with raw fish, Yaki is a Japanese style of cuisine in which food is either cooked, broiled or pan fried using an iron griddle.“This year’s festival is different from the one we organised last time. This year, we are looking at both Sushi and Yaki. We have master chefs of Japanese cusine, Joseph Ruiz and Renato R Bautiasta Jr, with us for the festival, who will showcase their culinary skills, and prepare the Sushi and grill for us,” informs Ashoks. The yaki menu has assorted grilled vegetables (Yasai No Guriru), tofu (Yakidofu), chicken (Guriru Tori), sesame crusted tuna (Maguro Tataki), cuttlefish (Ikiyakibatta), seared salmon (Yaki) and scallops (Hotategai) served with a wide range of exotic sauces. The sushi menu includes Rainbow Maki, Dragon Maki, Tuna Batera Maki, Nori Nashi Sake Maki and a few vegetarian sushi such as Sarada Batera Maki and Tanoki Asparagus Maki. “Two of the must-tries at our festival is the Sunshine roll (Prepared using Avocado, cucumber and carrot, topped with rice, mango and Salmon) priced at `840 plus taxes and the Sarada Batera Maki (Veg Sushi, which is served layered and not cut-and-served or rolled-and-served) priced at `540 plus taxes. Also, our fest menu includes various veg sushis as well, so the vegetarians too can indulge in Japanese delicacies,” he says. The Sushi Yaki festival is on till March 18 at Teppan at Benjarong, 146/537, TTK Road, Alwarpet.
