BHUBANESWAR: The School and Mass Education Department will start a high-level inquiry into the alleged corporal punishment meted out to a Class IX student of Capital High School, Unit III, here from Monday.Pratap Keshari Jena, a Class IX student and a resident of PHD Colony in Satyanagar, committed suicide on Thursday evening, allegedly after having been humiliated at the school.He took the extreme step by jumping before the train near Satyanagar.The body was found at the railway tracks on Friday morning.Sources in the Department said the inquiry would ascertain if Pratap was subjected to corporal punishment at school by two teachers as alleged by his family members.Stringent action would be initiated against the teachers if the allegation is found to be true, sources added.Meanwhile, the school managing committee in its general body meeting on Sunday, mourned the death of Pratap.The members said a detailed inquiry would also be conducted by the school authorities to find out the truth.Stating that alleg a t i on o f corporal punishment is ‘baseles s ’ , they said adequate measures were being taken by the teachers and other staff to bring up students in a disciplined manner.Earlier on Friday, school headmistress Bandana Mohapatra had refuted the allegation and said teachers of the school had been strictly instructed not to beat any student and inform the parents or local guardians about mischievous conduct by any student.
