KOCHI: The curtains will rise to a colourful display of cultural programmes at the inauguration of the 55th Kerala State Schools Athletics Championship in Maharaja’s College Stadium on Thursday. More than 2000 students from various schools are set to enthrall the audience during an hour-long inaugural ceremony, Ernakulam District Sports Coordinator Jose John said. The venue was a beehive of activity on Tuesday as the rehearsals were on for the upcoming ceremony. Programmes will include traditional folk-arts, thematic displays, aerobics, acrobatics and martial arts.A significant addition to the ceremony, among other performances, is a theme song starting with the line ‘Kayika Mela Than Nambukale Harshadharaghalode Swagatham Cheyunnu’(Hearty welcome to budding athletes). It will be performed by 100 students from the Government Girls High School, Ernakulam, under the supervision of K Jayalakshmi.“The theme song has been composed to inspire fellow athletes to rise high in life,” said John Ralbin, in-charge of the cultural programmes. Traditional art forms including ‘Chendamelam,’ ‘Thirivathirakali,’ ‘Theyam,’ ‘Kathakali,’ ‘Panchavadyam,’ ‘Dhaf Muttu’ and ‘Kol Kali’ will be staged during the function. “Students and teachers are working hard to stage the inaugural ceremony successfully. The athletes from other districts will arrive on Wednesday,” said Jose John.The mass display will include 225 students from St Teresa’s HSS, 200 students from St Pius High School, 200 students from St Antony’s HSS, 200 students from St Mary’s HS and 200 students from St Jude’s School. Colourful costumes and accessories will be an added attraction of the display. A team of seven students from the Government Girls HSS, winners in the state schools arts festival, will perform the ‘Panchavadyam’. In addition to the students’ performances, noted drummer Joe Michael Francis will also display his talents.
