BANGALORE: To create awareness about Epilepsy, the Indian Epilepsy Association, oganised ‘National Epilepsy Day-2011’ at the Indira Gandhi Institute of Child Health on Sunday.Speaking at the event K V Muralidharan, secretary, IEA said “Epilepsy is one of the most misunderstood disorders in the country. About 70-75 per cent of epilepsy cases are curable. Everyone is not aware of the treatment, and suffer from their own prejudices, due to unawareness.” Dr P Sathish Chandra, director and vice-chancellor, NIMHANS said “A stigma is attached with epilepsy. There are many myths and misconceptions. Epilepsy can be cured with a treatment for 2-3 years. A change in attitude is needed to remove superstitions relating to the disease”.A exhibition with brain samples relating to epilepsy was also held and more than 1,000 school children participated in the exhibition. As a part of the awareness drive, essay competition on ‘Teens and Epilepsy’ was held.
