Acting Chief Justice of Kerala High Court Justice Manjula Chellur said that it was becoming increasingly difficult to get candidates for the judiciary since most lawyers take to corporate firms after the completion of the law course. She was speaking at the Advocates Enrolment to the Kerala High Court held here on Sunday.
Justice Manjula Chellur urged the new candidates to stick to the profession even if it does not yield material success in the early years.
“This is a profession in which you need to prove your mettle. The first few years might be difficult since you need to learn the skills and gain experience.
“You will need the support of your family in these days,” said Justice Manjula Chellur. “But this is a noble profession. It’s a profession which helps restore the principles of democracy
and point out when the system is deviating from its democratic principles ensured by the Constitution,” she said.
The function saw over 370 candidates, including film-maker Balachandra Menon, enrol. The actor recalled his role models for the profession from the characters in two various movies.
“When it comes to being a lawyer, there are two characters that come to my mind, one is the shrewd
lawyer, Namboothiri played by myself in the film Vilambaram and the other is the the soft-hearted lawyer, Unnithan played by Prem Nazir in Karyam Nissaram. In my career as a lawyer I hope to combine both these qualities,” said Menon.
But he added that he will be honest and that he will not lie in court. The actor also stressed that this is not in any way an end to his career in cinema.
“I will continue to participate in every field of cinema,” he said.
Lizzamma Augustine, former District Court Judge, member of Company Law Board, Chennai, and former chairperson of the Kerala Taxes Tribunal, also enroled.
She is the wife of former MP Sebastian Paul. Lizamma will now be practising in her husband’s office.
