KOCHI: Against the backdrop of Thursday’s report in the City Express on the parking fees at St Teresa’s College, the authorities have decided to stop the practice. “Parking is free of cost henceforth. It was introduced to regulate the vehicle users. As the school is part of the college campus, the safety of tiny tots and school children have to be ensured. Vehicles were plied all over the campus and were parked haphazardly, so it had to be regulated. Now things are more organised,” said the principal of the college. The parking space was opened last month and the authorities fixed an annual fee of `1,500 for two-wheelers and `3,000 for cars annually which did not go well with the students. Not willing to shell out that kind of money, some students started parking their vehicles outside the campus, much to their inconvenience. “We used to park our vehicles on Convent Junction and walk to college which was a pain,” said a few girls. Security was also at stake. Now we can leave our vehicles safe inside the parking space and be free of worries,” said a few girls. A few students said that they stopped using their two-wheelers and cars to college ever since the parking fee was introduced. Now the gates of the parking area are open to cars and two-wheelers free of cost. “The whole college is happy with the decision of doing away with the parking fees. It’s a relief,” said many students in unison. Even the boarders are a happy lot. Earlier we had to park the vehicle at the parking lot and walk with our luggage to the hostel. Now we are saved from such hassles as we have been allowed to go up to the hostel in our vehicle, said a few hostellers.
