Srinagar, Bengaluru Among 30 Cities in Govt's Latest Smart Cities List

New Delhi: Thirty cities are part of the latest list of smart cities released by the government on Friday, with Srinagar, Thiruvananthapuram, Bengaluru, Allahabad, Aligarh and Gangtok among the notable mentions.

The number of Indian cities included in the Smart Cities Mission now goes up to 90. As many as 20 cities will now compete for the remaining 10 slots, Union Urban Development Minister Venkaiah Naidu said in a tweet.

The 30 cities include Thiruvananthapuram, Naya Raipur, Rajkot, Amravati, Patna, Karimnagar, Muzaffarpur, Puducherry, Gandhinagar, Srinagar, Sagar, Karnal, Satna, Bengaluru, Shimla, Dehradun, Tiruppur, Pimpri Chinchwad, Bilaspur, Pasighat, Jammu, Dahod, Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi, Tiruchirapalli, Jhansi, Aizwal, Allahabad, Aligarh and Gangtok.

The third round of the Smart Cities Missions was supposed to have included 40 cities as announced by Naidu in January. Naidu said that 45 cities contested for the 40 available smart city slots but only 30 were selected to ensure their feasibility and workable plans. An investment of Rs 57,393 crore has been proposed under smart city plans.

Parameters used to compile the list include adequate water supply, assured electricity supply, sanitation, including solid waste management, efficient urban mobility and public transport, affordable housing, especially for the poor, robust IT connectivity and digitalization, good governance (especially e-Governance and citizen participation), sustainable environment, safety and security of citizens (particularly women, children and the elderly), health and education​
