KOCHI: They may not know what the medals were meant for, but the children stepping up to receive the awards were nonetheless on cloud nine and others were cheering for them heartily. For these special children, coming from various parts of the state, the past two days were a platform for experiencing joy, sharing skills and more than anything, making new friends. The experience was courtesy the Special Olympics Kerala State Meet 2012, which concluded with the valedictory function held on Saturday. The Meet received 1213 students from 172 special schools across the state. Kottayam distrcit was declared the overall champions, while Ernakulam and Idukki were placed at second and third spots respectively. “After witnessing the enthusiasm of the participants and their teachers, it was like receiving a spectacular glimpse of the much-awaited London Olympics. I congratulate all the teachers for nurturing the special citizens of our society. These talents need more support from people around them and the government,” said Dominic Presentation MLA.Welcoming the gathering, J Oommen, chairman, Special Olympics Kerala, said, “Our aim is the 2015 Special Olympics, which will be held in Los Angeles. We should encourage these young talents to reach the international level.” Representative of Special Olympics Bharat, Virendra Singh and Special Olympics Area Director, Sr Rani Joe were present.
