The former Indian captain was picked in the team as an all-rounder.

Chennai: Speculations were put to rest as Sourav Ganguly returned in playing XI after almost three months after Indian captain Rahul Dravid won the toss.

He elected to bat in the rain-marred first Test against Sri Lanka at the M A Chidambaram Stadium.

The match began on the fourth day after Tea after the first three day's play was washed out due to rain.

Wicket-keeper Mahendra Singh Dhoni is also making his Test debut.

Though a result is unlikely, India went into the match with four specialist bowlers -- two seamers Ajit agarkar and Irfan Pathan and two spinners Harbhajan Singh and Anil Kumble -- hoping to gain some psychological advantage ahead of the second Test beginning at New Delhi on December 10.
