Here is good news for those living in up-land areas in Udayagiri constituency, with the much-awaited Somasila canal and lift-irrigation project may soon become a reality.

The project is to provide drinking water and irrigate farms by lifting 5 TMC of the surplus flood waters of Pennar from the Somasila reservoir and store the same in 7 balancing reservoirs, which have been proposed at suitable locations in the command area.

At a cost of Rs 799 cr the project will ensure water for 90,000 acres with an allocation of 4.68 tmc and provide drinking water, with an allocation of 0.20 tmc for 2.35 lakh persons throughout the year.

According to official sources, as many as 52 drought-prone villages in 6 mandals, such as, Marripadu, Duthaluru, Vinjamuru, Ananthasagaram, Antakuru and Udayagiri in Udayagiri constituency would be getting water as 5 tmc of water would be lifted in 90 days.

This water would help the ongoing agricultural operations. Finance minister Anam Ramanarayana Reddy on his two-day official tour of the district disclosed that tenders would be called in the middle of August this year and the project would be completed soon.

He said that the department of finance has already received orders from the chief minister and funds would be released very soon.

As part of this project the existing minor irrigation tanks would be converted to balancing reservoirs at PN Palle, Ponguru, Iskapalle, Pegallapadu, Kampasamudram, Chabolu and Gundemadkala villages.

According to Somasila superintending engineer Somasekhar 8 lifts would be in operation for a total of 21 km for the lift-irrigation scheme and a 37 km gravity-canal would be constructed under this programme.

According to revenue officials 9,160 acres of patta land, 1,040 acres of assigned lands would be acquired in Marripadu, Duthaluru, Vinjamuru, A Sagram, Atmakuru and Udayagiri mandals.

Nearly 520 families are likely to be displaced by the project.

It is also learnt that the land would be acquired after finalisation of tenders.
