Welcoming the NSS decision to withdraw the cases in the Supreme Court against raising the income ceiling for the creamy layer, SNDP Yogam general secretary Vellappally Natesan on Sunday said i t showed their “big heart”.
“This is a major step in the process of Nair-Ezhava unity. Though the cases (in creamy layer issue) were a roadblock in the unity of the two communities, we have never raised it as a demand in the discussions. This decision shows the magnanimity of the NSS in settling an issue which was a hurdle in the unification process,” he said.
Vellappally told Express that further discussions between the two organisations would be held after Onam. “There are only minor disputes that exists between the two communities. But those are not a restriction for the talks. The venue can be anywhere (for the talks) and we don’t mind even if it is the house of the NSS general secretary,” he said.
He hinted that the decision would help the NSS gain support for some other demands raised by them and would act as a “strong bridge”.
He said that somehow the creamy layer turned out to be an issue between both the communities despite the fact that there were many benefactors for the reservation. “There were some sections engaged in widening the rift between the two communities on the issue. The
new development will surely send a disheartening note to those who were trying to cash in on the rift,” he said.
