SMS powers BJP’s power campaign
Punjab's BJP is using the easy reach of the SMS to highlight the ongoing power crisis.

Chandigarh: The opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is using the easy reach of the SMS to highlight the ongoing power crisis in Punjab and put the ruling Congress on the mat.

Amritsar, Ludhiana and Moga have power cuts for four hours daily, Jalandhar and Hoshiarpur for six hours and Ferozepur for 10 hours, says one of the messages being received and forwarded by residents on their mobile phones.

Among those behind the SMS highlighting the failure of the Punjab government is Sukhpal Nanu, a BJP legislator from Ferozepur.

The message urges the receiver to forward it to five more people.

Another SMS says: "Raatan nu neend na aave, dine chain na aave; jad main rab nu puchhiya ki rabba ki eh pyar hai taan rab muskaraya aur boliya, 'Beta Congress de raj vich light toh bina saariyenda eho haal hai'". (I can't sleep at night, nor can I relax during the day. When I asked god if I am in love, he replied smilingly, 'Son, in the Congress rule everyone is feeling the same without power."

Sources in the BJP said party leaders had engaged professionals to write and send such messages.

While Chandigarh continues to get uninterrupted power supply, other districts of Punjab are reeling under an acute power shortage. Power cuts are not too bad in Patiala either - the home city of Chief Minister Amarinder Singh and constituency of his wife.

Sources in the state electricity board said a daily requirement report was being prepared to ensure power to all parts of Punjab.

They ascribed unusually long power cuts to a gap between the demand and supply.
