ANGUL: With coal trafficking rearing its ugly head again in the Talcher coal belt, Angul SP Satyabrata Bhoi has suspended a sub-inspector, Samarjit Naik of Talcher Town police station. He has been charged with conniving with the coal mafia. Acting on information that the said officer had let go coal-laden trucks illegally, we verified the allegation and found it to be true, said Naik. He warned that stern action would be taken against any officer found colluding with coal mafias who appear to have been active in coal belt recently. Earlier, another assistant sub-inspector Bhagwan Sahu of the same police station was suspended on similar charges and transferred to Purunakote police station in the district. There is a spurt in illegal coal traffic even by trucks after a lull. Going by the seizure of three stolen coal-laden trucks by outside district police, it is evident that the notorious coal smuggling from Talcher coalfield once again thrives with active support of police and mining officials. This is the first time that a police officer of a sub-inspector rank has been suspended on charges turning a blind eye to coal theft.
