SHIMOGA: Sanskrit scholar Mathoor Krishnamurthi’s body was cremated on the banks of river Tunga in Mathoor village on Friday afternoon.Police accorded state honours firing five shots in the air as a mark of respect.Body of late Mathoor arrived here at 5 am on Friday morning and was kept in the premises of Sharada High School for general public and villagers to pay their last respects.Chairman of the Legislative Council D H Shankarmurthy, state BJP president K S Eshwarappa along withhis family members, MP B Y Raghavendra, Seer Balagangadhara of Adichunchanagiri mutt, Shimoga, Seer Mallikarjuna Murugharajendra, general secretary of Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha, Hasiru Sene K T Gangadhar and other political leaders also paid their last respects.Deputy Commissioner V Ponnuraj, SP Raman Gupta, Assistant Commissioner Vaishali, tahshildar Manjunath, Assistant Director of the Department of Kannada and Culture N Harikumar were among those present at the funeral.Mathoor Krishnamurthi’s son-in-law Nandakumar lit fire to the pyre amidst vedic chants at 12.30 noon.Condolence meetingIn the evening condolence meeting was organised in the premises of Sharada high school of the village where people from all walks of life took part.CREMATORIUM FOR MATHOORThe village was renovated only a fortnight ago.Mathoor Krishnamurthi’s special attention made it possible for renovating the crematorium of the village. His idea was to develop the burial ground on the lines of a garden with flowering plants, pongamia tree and Aralikatte (platform constructed for peepal tree) inside it.Mathoor’s contribution for rennovation was significant. It was a coincidence that Mathoor’s body was the first body to be cremated in the renovated burial ground that was developed on his idea, said Seetharama Avadhani
