Sherlock: 10 things you probably didn't expect to see in episode one of the third season
Who would have thought the detective would choose a near-death moment to test how John Watson felt about him?

There were many moments in the new season of Sherlock that came as a surprise to even hardcore fans. Who would have thought the genius detective would choose a tense near-death moment to test how John Watson felt about him? These 10 things make this season absolutely superb.

####The moustache: John Watson, who is struggling to move on after Sherlock Holmes ’died’ in ’The Reichenbach Fall’, has grown a handlebar moustache that his current live-in partner Mary Morstan secretly hates. His former caretaker Mrs Hudson (Una Stubbs) says it ages him and she’s probably right.

The gay undertones: The one standout theme this season is the strong gay undertone. The delightful Mrs Hudson cannot believe that Watson isn’t gay and insists that ’live and let live’ is her motto. There is a kiss, albeit a fantasy of a conspiracy theorist, between Jim Moriarty and Sherlock Holmes. The sexual tension – in a series of playful back-and-forth riposte between Holmes and Watson is almost unbearable.

The Sherlock-Molly kiss: It’s done with such flair and swagger, that this one has to be a theory. Sherlock Holmes kisses Molly Hooper (Louise Brealey), who helps him fake his fall.

Sherlock-Moriarty kiss: Yes, that was quite a bomb that Mark Gatiss dropped causally in our lap. Although it was just a theory of a conspiracy theorist, this one is stuff fan fiction is made of.

Benedict Cumberbatch’s actual parents in a cameo: That was a nice touch. Timothy Carlton and Wanda Ventham, who are both actors, play Sherlock Holmes’ mother and father in a scene.

The various explanations on how he survived the fall: How did he fake his death? This question was the subject of numerous fan sites for the past many months. The actual episode teases the viewers with several alternative theories and no right answers.

Molly’s fiance: It was a hilarious moment when Molly introduces his fiance who dresses exactly like Sherlock. Our Baker Street man isn’t amused, but Watson is, abundantly.

Mary Morstan: John Watson’s fiancee, Mary Morstan is his real life partner Amanda Abbington. Another nice touch there.

’V for Vendetta': A nice re-adaptation of the 2006 British action thriller ’V for Vendetta’ plot describing the November 5 plan to blow up the London underground with an explosive-laden train.

A budding romance crushed? Holmes invites Molly out to thank her for helping him fake his death. He tells her how Moriarty overlooked her part in the whole plan, believing her an insignificant cog in the machine. She meant more to him than anyone else. Molly informs him, not without regret, that she is engaged to someone else.
