New Delhi: Special Economic Zone (SEZ) should have a disaster management group and have adequate fire fighting arrangements, a standing committee of the West Bengal assembly said on Thursday.
Members of the Standing Committee on Commerce and Industry led by chairman Sudip Bandopadhyay who visited the Falta SEZ where a massive fire broke out on April 8 destroying some plastics units, said in its report to be presented to the assembly, the Committee would recommend these measures in SEZs.
''In our report we will recommend that in Falta and in all SEZs to be set up in the state, there should be a disaster management group and adequate fire fighting arrangements,'' Bandhopadhyay said.
He said that the Committee found that there was no disaster management group, nor sufficient fire fighting equipment or water in the Falta SEZ.
Most of the 2,300 employees of units destroyed in the fire, were rendered jobless, he said.
He said it was decided that a disaster management group would be formed by the Development Commissioner of Falta SEZ and all 93 units should have adequate fire fighting arrangement.
He also said that the units in Falta SEZ wanted assistance from the West Bengal government for infrastructure development.
