BANGALORE: Fate had different plans for Prathima (56), who was scheduled to go to US on Sunday night to be with her pregnant daughter. An argument took an ugly turn after Shantha Kumar (65), Bangalore University's retired assistant registrar, mauled his wife Prathima and committed suicide.
According to the police, the couple in their residence in Basaveshwaranagar had a disagreement over an issue, which led to Shantha Kumar banging his wife's head against a wall, leaving her bleeding profusely. Afraid of facing the consequences of his action, the retired BU official committed suicide by hanging.The police said, "Though the incident occurred late in the night, it came to light only when their housemaid Kaveri went to the house. At around 9 am on Sunday, Kaveri peeped through the window when nobody responded to her call. Appalled at the sight of Shantha Kumar hanging from the fan, she immediately informed [about] the matter to Rakshith, their son."

Rakshith found his mother lying in a pool of blood with severe head injuries, but still breathing. He rushed his mother to NIMHANS for treatment, where she is being treated in ICU, the police said.

The exact reason for the incident is yet to be ascertained, while the police are awaiting for Prathima to recover. Further investigations are on.
