BELGAUM: Primary and Secondary Education Minister Vishweshwara Hegde Kageri claimed that the move of merging of government schools having less than five students is to provide quality education.He was speaking after inaugurating ‘digi-school sytem’ at a government school, the first of its kind in the State, in Vadgaon on Monday. Defending the move of merging government schools with less than five students with nearby schools, he quoted the opinion of education experts that schools having over 20 children can only provide qualitative education to the students. If everyone comes forward to admit their children in government schools, then there will be no question of merging or closure of schools, he added.He called upon those who are protesting the government’s decision, to concentrate on improving the strength and quality of education in government schools. Appreciating MLA Abhay Patil’s efforts, who has provided digital boards in government schools, he said that he will try to adopt the idea in all government schools by next year.Foreign Trip MLA Abhay Patil, who spent Rs 50,000 for the pilot project, said that he will provide benches to all 90 primary and high schools of Belgaum South Assembly constituency by August 2012. He also said that teachers of Kannada, Marathi and Urdu schools of his constituency will be sent on study tours to foreign countries. An experts’ committee will select one best teacher from each medium, every year, he added.National Education Day on November 11Minister Kageri directed  teachers to celebrate National Education Day on November 11 in the state.  Addressing at a programme on Monday, he  said that November 11 is the birthday of India’s first Union Education Minister Maulana Abul Kalam Azad.  He also said that to inculcate the spirit of learning and importance of education among students, teachers should organise activities like debates.
