RTO officials on Tuesday conducted an inspection of school autos, cabs and vans owned by industries and factories in Vellore district.
The check on vehicles was intensified after the tragic death of two school girls in Chennai and Ambur.
Vellore Regional Transport Officer Pon Senthilnathan said, “There are about 800 school vehicles and 300 college vehicles, including buses and vans, running in the district. Out of this, 554 vehicles have been checked so far and the licenses of 26 vehicles have been temporarily cancelled and warning and instructions have been given to 158 vehicle owners.”
The team on Monday inspected 327 vehicles in Vellore and temporarily cancelled the licenses of 16 vehicles and warned 158 vehicles to ensure safety measures. Checks were also conducted in Ranipet, Ambur and Gudiyattam and inspection would continue on Wednesday in Vaniyambadi and Tiruppattur.
The RTO warned that the vehicles whose licenses have been cancelled should not run on roads unless the flaws were rectified and approval was got from the RTO.
“Private autos being overloaded is a common scene every morning and evening. Checks would be conducted on these vehicles too,” he noted.
