CHENNAI: Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa on Friday earmarked Rs 47.49 crore for modernisation of the State police department during the current financial year.The allocation of funds is as follows: Constructing new buildings (Rs 15.51 crore), constructing new houses for police personnel (Rs 5.60 crore), buying vehicles (Rs 9.38 crore), Communication facilities (Rs 23 lakh), training (Rs 1.20 crore), procurement of modern equipment (Rs 14.60 crore) and Forensic department, DVAC and Home Guards (Rs 1.51 crore). Jayalalithaa, during her first tenure as the Chief Minister in 1991 itself, announced many measures for modernisation of the department. The measures include the procurement of modern vehicles, sophisticated weapons and linking all police stations through digital microwave network.
