KOCHI: Owing to the strike, while majority of Kochiites chose to take a break and laze around on Tuesday, the residents of CBI Road in Kathrikkadavu set a role model by using the strike day to clean their premises.By 9 am, with the help of a couple of manual labourers, around 20 residents of the area got together and initiated the cleaning of the roads, drains and plots in the locality. The residents said that they had taken such an initiative as Kochi Corporation had turned a deaf ear towards the innumerable complaints filed by the CBI Road Residents Association.“In our area, drains are always blocked. Although we had submitted many petitions to the authorities concerned, no major action has been taken so far. Sometimes the Corporation workers do a superficial cleaning. However, the drains would get clogged within a day or two. Therefore, we decided to use the strike day to clean the drains,” said Gilbert Aanjipparambil, president of CBI Road Residents Association. The cleaning drive continued till late evening. The residents also pointed out that the conversion of the road linking Kathrikkadavu Road to the Pullepady Bridge into a one-way is causing much distress to them as they have to take a diversion of nearly a kilometre to get to the eastern side of the city. The problem arises since they cannot access the Kathrikkadavu Road directly which actually is barely a few metres away.“We had brought this issue to the notice of the Mayor, opposition leader and even the Chief Minister during the Mass Conduct Programme. However, nobody took notice of it. The problem will be solved by surfacing a 10-metre stretch of road that links our colony to the Kathrikkadavu underpass. Even though the authorities concerned promised immediate action, no step has been taken till date,” said residents.
