BANGALORE: Employees at 14 under staffed Beggar’s rehabilitation centres in the state may finally get some respite from their added responsibilities as the state government has approved the central rehabilitation committee’s proposal to recruit eligible candidates to fill all the vacant posts. According to sources, over 50 per cent of the sanctioned posts in the rehabilitation centres are vacant. Social Welfare Department principal secretary E Venkataiah said, “We have approved the proposal sent by the Central Relief Committee to recruit eligible candidates to fill all the sanctioned vacant posts. Now the committee can initiate the recruitment process and it can be completed soon.”According to sources, around 114 of the 217 sanctioned posts in the 14 rehabilitation centres situated in Bangalore, Bellary, Bijapur, Belgaum, Chitradurga, Davangere, Hubli-Darwad, Kolar, Mysore, Gulbarga, Mangalore, Raichur, Shimoga and Tumkur are vacant. Moreover, the sanction posts were not revised for a long time to meet the increasing demands. Therefore, the central relief committee has been hiring people on a daily wage basis to ensure that the existing staff are not over-burdened. One of the staff members on the condition of anonymity said that though they we have been hiring some daily wagers we cannot rely on them and we have to supervise them regularly. As the number of the daily wage workers varies from time to time we do not get regular and trained workers, the staff member said. The rehabilitation centre in Bellary alone has hired nearly thirty daily wage workers to carry out various works.
