THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A record 88.08 per cent pass was recorded in the Higher Secondary School examinations conducted in March, the results of which were announced by Education Minister P K Abdu Rabb here on Tuesday. Last year, the pass percentage was 82.25. Out of the 2,93,112 students appeared for the exams, 2,58,179 have passed and 112 schools secured cent percent win. Out of the 1,56,499 girls appeared for the exams, 1,43,620 have come out successfully posting a pass percentage of 91.77. Among the 1,36,613 boys,1,14,559 became eligible for higher studies (83.86%). The split-up of pass percentage in various streams is as follows: Science - 87%, humanities - 88.38% and commerce - 89.85%. While 1,18,401 students appeared for the exams from government schools have become successful, 1,13,699 from aided schools and 25,869 from unaided schools are in the list of the winners. The minister said that 3,324 students secured A+ grade for all subjects, of which, 2,234 are boys and 1,100 girls. Of this, 2,816 are in the science stream, 423 commerce and 95 from the humanities stream. Last year,the total A+ grade winners in various streams were only 2,795. The highest pass percentage was registered in Kozhikode district (90.96) and the lowest in Pathanamthitta (81.2). St Mary’s School, Pattom, Thiruvananthapuram, which presented the highest number of students for the exams (704), also took the honour of notching up the highest number of winners - 673 with a pass percentage of 95.6. The school also topped in the number of A+ grade winners in a single school in the state - 50. Vivekodayam Boys HSS, Thrissur (45) and Sacred Heart Convent HSS, Thrissur (44) follows the list. Thrissur tops the district which took the maximum number of A+ grade winners- 383. Out of the 112 schools which recorded cent percent win, nine are special schools, 68 are unaided schools and 28 are aided schools, whereas only seven government schools could join the list. Grace marks were awarded to 24,552 candidates in this year’s exams, the Minister said. The pass percentage in Part 1 & II exams is 91.97 against last year’s 90 and in Part I,II and III, the pass percentage is 84.73 against the preceding year’s 78.15. VHSS schools in Kozhikkode district are credited with the highest pass percentage -97.94. The lowest is in Pathanamthitta district with 82.62% of pass. Failed candidates can appear for the SAY (Save A Year) exams, slated to commence from June 18, the Minister said. Those successful but aspiring for improving their grades can also attend the SAY exams. The last date for submission of applications for both categories is May 25. Abdu Rabb also said that the proposed reforms in the VHSS stream would take some more time.
