CHENNAI: Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa on Thursday called upon the medical graduates who received their degrees this year to extend their selfless service to the people, especially to the rural population of the State.Delivering her address at the 22nd Convocation of the Tamil Nadu Dr MGR Medical University here, the CM said: “service to humanity is service to God…..let your service reach the poorest of the poor, irrespective of caste, creed or religion.”The new graduates must remember that they should use their education productively to alleviate the sufferings of the poor and the needy, the CM said and added that she was expecting wholehearted support from the new graduates.Giving a detailed account of the initiatives being taken to improve the health index of the State, Jayalalithaa said a new initiativ e, the ‘Hospital on Wheels Scheme’ would be launched soon to provide healthcare services at the doorstep in remote areas.Utilising the funds allotted to the Tamil Nadu Health System Project by the World Bank, diagnostic services in all district headquarters hospitals would be upgraded with additional supply of diagnostic, therapeutic and life saving equipment.The Chief Minister’s Comprehensive Health Insurance Scheme would be launched soon. Under this, the coverage and sum assured would be `4 lakh for a total period of four years.A total of 6,941 medical students got their degrees. Of them, 2,247 got them in person. Also 123 students received medals from Governor K Rosaiah in person. Jayalalithaa presented life-time achievement awards to Dr V Shantha, Dr D Raja, Dr Prema Krishnaswami, Dr C S Vijay Shankar, Dr R Prabhakar, Dr K Sridhar, Dr K Ravindranath, Dr R Raveendran, Dr S P Thyagarajan and Dr Jayam Kannan for the services to the poor.
