Opposition Congress on Wednesday accused the Chhattisgarh government of failing to provide proper medical facilities in the remote areas, particularly in tribal pockets of the state.
On the third day of ongoing Monsoon Session, Congress legislator from Dantewada, Devati Karma raised the issue and asked how many contractual doctors were posted in district hospitals in Bastar Division during 2003 and 2010.
"Whether the services of these contractual doctors were terminated in 2010, if yes, how many doctors were reappointed under contract and how many were removed and why?" she asked.
In his reply, Health and Family Welfare Minister Amar Agrawal said that 19 contractual doctors were posted in various district hospitals of the division during this period.
"In 2010, 18 doctors were re-appointed under contract but services of one dentist were discontinued as there was availability of a dentist in Maharani Medical College Hospital, Jagdalpur," he said.
However, Karma countered Agrawal saying that there are not enough number of doctors in remote areas of Bastar.
"In case of emergency, people have to rush to either Jagdalpur or capital Raipur. When the state government is going to make arrangements for providing sufficient medical facilities in those areas, to avoid trouble to people," she said.
Citing a personal example of her son Deepak, Karma said that he had to be rushed to Maharani Medical College Hospital at Jagdalpur from Dantewada after he was bitten by a snake, and then to Raipur for suitable treatment.
Agrawal said in his reply that the state government was making all efforts to ensure better medical facilities in remote areas across the state and as soon as doctors would be available they will be posted accordingly.
However, unsatisfied over his reply, Congress legislators staged a walk out while accusing the government of failing to provide proper medical facilities in the remote areas.
