BALASORE: Heavy downpour literally threw cold water on the Raja spirits in the northern parts of the State on Wednesday. Though the weather was fine in the morning, rain, triggered by a low pressure, started lashing in the noon forcing the festival enthusiasts to stay indoors. After a prolonged summer if locals had thought that they would celebrate the festival with fun, then they were mistaken. Local residents resented as the heavy rain played the spoilsport. A college-goer Padmini Das said her dream to play on swings in the village mango garden remained unfulfilled as the rain forced her to stay indoors. “I had come to my native village to play on swings in our orchard after seven years,” she said. The girls who used to decorate themselves with ‘Chandan topa’ on their forehead and ‘alta’ on feet were a disappointed lot. The youths too expressed helplessness as they could not play a game of kabaddi and badi khel during the festival. The youths working away from their native place and come home once a year were the biggest losers. “As Raja is one of our most celebrated festivals, we had taken leave to come to the village and join the merry-making,” said Chandra Sekhar Mohanty, who works in the Indian Air Force. According to the local Met office sources, the district on Wednesday received a total of about 182-mm rain. Though temperature and humidity have dropped, bringing relief, many people feel the rain spoiled the celebrations.
