KOCHI: In an effort to create awareness on radiation and its advancement in the field of medicine, an exhibition ‘Development of Radiological Technology and Radiation Safety’ was organised by the Indian Society of Radiographers and Technologists (ISRT). The expo was organised to mark the celebration of World Radiography Day at the Ernakulam General Hospital. Apart from ISRT, two other departments - Radio Diagnosis and Radio Therapy - also took part in the initiative. The two-day exhibition focuses on the innovations, new concepts and equipment used in Diagnostic Radiology. With an array of charts exhibiting information on radiation and its use in various treatments like chemotherapy, radiography and hormone therapy, the exhibition aims at explaining the advantages and side-effects, of using radiation, to people. Treatment equipment including catheters, detectors like Survey Monitor, Continuation Monitor and CR Films are on display. The exhibition provides an opportunity to the public to understand the applications of diagnostic radiology from conventional X-rays to interventional radiological procedures and growth of radiation therapy. Moreover, it speaks on the harmful effects and radiation safety from mobile phones to X and gamma rays and smoking.  “Our intention is to make people understand that the radiation therapy is beneficial for certain treatments and each radiation has its own effect. Most of them have a notion that X-rays and certain radiation treatments worsen a patient’s health. But we need to change that notion and I think we have progressed to some  extent through the exhibitions we have held earlier,” said Sivakumar, Medical Radiation Technologist of the General Hospital.
