CHENNAI: Avid quizzers made their way to one of the most awaited open quizzes of the year, the IIT-Madras Open Quiz, on Sunday. The annual event attracts some of the sharpest minds in the quizzing circuit. Starting with 40 questions for the preliminaries, ten of which were very tough tie-breakers, the Student Activity Centre in IIT was abuzz with excited quizzers from schools, colleges, corporates and teams. Of the numerous teams which registered, only eight got through to the finals. NIT Trichy was the best college team, and Infosys the best corporate team. The best team name award went to The Good, The Bad and the 2G Malcom.The quiz consisted of eight rounds. In true Open Quiz spirit, they were not conventional. Although the Cross Connect round baffled the contestants at first, they soon got the hang of it. The Buzzer Challenge round saw interesting competition by pitting two teams against each other in a buzzer battle. A written round on word origins and a visual connect round, along with four general rounds based on a modified infinite bounce.The audience too enjoyed competing for the gift vouchers and t-shirts. The winners were QED, consisting of Gopal Kidao, Swaminathan G and Jayakanthan R; followed by Mama Machan Maapilai with VV Ramanan, Kiran Vijayakumar and Ramkumar. Navin Jayakumar, Anil Kumar K and Ravi Mundoli of Mindswept were placed third. Winners were awarded cash prizes.
