The Public Works Department will retain its ownership over the old Mattanchery bridge. The department will also undertake immediate maintenance work on the bridge for which tender is likely to be invited this month itself.
This was decided at a meeting held in Thiruvananthapuram on Wednesday which was attended by Dominic Presentation MLA, representatives of the Greater Cochin Development Authority (GCDA) and the local bodies in West Kochi region.
“Earlier, there was a plan to hand over the bridge to the GCDA which was later found to be unpractical. Therefore, it has been decided that the PWD continue to be the custodian of the bridge,” Dominic Presentation told ‘City Express’.
The department is also planning an immediate repairing of the bridge at an estimated cost of Rs 60 lakh for which tender would be invited by September end.
It has also been decided to carry out an anti-rusting painting on the bridge which would cost around `20 lakh, he said.
“After completing the repair works, the bridge would continue to be opened for two and three-wheelers only,” he said.
