THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A routine transfer procedure in the Finance Department of Kerala University has kicked up a row with the pro-CPM Kerala University Employees’ Union (KUEU) locking horns with Vice-Chancellor A Jayakrishnan on the issue.Sources said that the failure of the top officials of the Finance Department to take necessary steps to release funds for the renovation of the university women’s hostel at Kariavattom was the reason for the transfer. The failure in releasing funds in time and the subsequent delay in the renovation work resulted in one student getting injured when a portion of the hostel building collapsed. This incident seriously damaged the reputation of the university. As the Finance Department failed to take necessary follow-up action on the issue, the VC issued an order the other day transferring all the top officials of the university, including the joint registrar in charge of the finance officer. The other officials transferred were the deputy registrar, assistant registrar and a section officer. However, the KUEU termed the transfers as ‘’politically motivated’’. The transfers were made to please the UDF leadership, KUEU general secretary K Mohankumar alleged in a statement. The transfers were made following the intervention of some UDF leaders and the pro-Congress union in the university. Though the Finance Department had made repeated pleas for the renovation of the hostel, the VC failed to take any action, he alleged. However, VC A Jayakrishnan termed the allegations as ‘’rubbish’’. It is a common procedure to transfer persons from the Finance Department to administration or examination wings. Transfers are not punishments. The VC does not act upon the advice of any outside forces and should not have to satisfy the interest of one group or the other, a statement issued by the VC said.
