Mumbai: A court on Saturday extended till May 3 the police custody of Pravin Mahajan, who is accused of trying to murder his elder brother, BJP leader Pramod Mahajan.
Magistrate R T Badge allowed Pravin to read newspapers in jail but turned down his plea for medical examination to determine his mental condition.
Special Public Prosecutor Srikant Bhatt described Pravin as an intelligent man who had evaded answers during interrogation.
Bhatt said the Mumbai Police wanted to question Pravin further, as he was dodging queries. Pravin had not given a full account of the bullets he had purchased. Of the total 90 bullets bought, he had given account of 34.
Police have sealed Pravin's locker in Shamrao Vithal Cooperative Bank and need to be checked thoroughly. Ballistic reports are awaited from the forensic laboratory in Hyderabad, said Bhatt.
The prosecutor said police had recorded statements of witnesses including Mahajan's wife Rekha, brother-in-law Gopinath Munde and other family members.
Police were still looking for the taxi driver who brought Pravin from Thane to Worli on April 22, the day he shot
at his brother.
