ALAPPUZHA: The Ambalappuzha Judicial First Class Magistrate Court, on Tuesday, sent Mayur Virendra Kumar, the seaman of ‘mv Prabhu Daya’, to police custody for four days.He is the second accused in the hit-run case involving the vessel, in which five fishermen on board ‘Don I’ were killed off the Alappuzha coast on March 1.The police team, lead by Ambalappuzha CI P V Baby, had lodged a petition in the court seeking Mayur’s release, who was arrested from Chennai on March 9.He was produced before the court on Friday which had remanded him in judicial custody for 14 days. On Monday, the Ambalappuzha police had submitted a petition seeking his custody.But as the Additional Public Prosecutor was absent, the petition was posted to Tuesday for hearing.After being released to the police custody, he was grilled, said the CI. The captain of the ship, Gordon Charles Pereira, was also taken into custody by the police team, led by Ernakulam Range IG K Padmakumar and Alappuzha DySP K Maheshkumar, from the ship on Tuesday. He will be produced before the Ambalappuzha Magistrate Court on Wednesday. Both will be brought to the accident spot off the Alappuzha coast to collect more evidence, the CI said.Maritime Fraternity Flays CaptainPereira’s ArrestKochi: The Maritime fraternity all over India has expressed deep shock over the arrest of mv Prabhu Daya’s Master Gordon Charles Pereira and the differential treatment meted out to him, compared to the captain of the Italian vessel, Enrica Lexie.“We hope that local authorities will take into consideration the ‘resolutions and guidelines on fair treatment in the event of a maritime accident as prepared by the Joint IMO and ILO ad hoc Expert Working Group on Fair Treatment of Seafarers and avoid the unnecessary criminalisation of seafarers,” said Captain Jacob Thomas.He also added that the Company of Master Mariners, Cochin Chapter, will take up the matter and will step in once they acquire all the facts.
