Two women including the mother of a 20-day-old female infant were held when they tried to sell the baby for Rs 5,000 here on Saturday.
Kalaivani (20), wife of Suresh Kumar, a car driver of Pandamangalam in Woraiyur, delivered a girl child 20 days ago at the GH. It is said Suresh Kumar abandoned Kalaivani when she was pregnant. When the baby was born, Kalaivani was in a dejected mood and was worried about taking care of the baby as she was living in acute poverty without any support.
Kalaivani developed a friendship with one R Banu (27) of Muthaliar Chathiram when she was in the hospital. Banu had allegedly suggested that she could sell the baby for money.
As per her suggestion, Kalaivani gave the baby to Banu who took it to Bheema Nagar on Friday. Banu handed over the baby to P Muthulakshmi of Kooni Bazar who was also a friend of Banu. It is said, Muthulakshmi has three sons and was longing for a female baby.
Babu, who knew that Muthulakshmi will accept the baby as she really longed for a daughter, handed over the infant to her. An unsuspecting Muthulakshmi agreed to bring up the baby. However, Banu allegedly demanded `5,000 for the baby. Infuriated at this, an alert, Muthulakshmi, who later realised that the baby girl was being sold to her, lodged a complaint with the Palakkarai police.
Based on the complaint, police arrested Banu and Kalaivani. Later, the baby was handed over to the government’s cradle scheme, which is an initiative taken up by the Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa to rescue unwanted girl child. The infant will now have a place to stay.
