For the residents of Bharat Ratna Rajiv Nagar at Pudur near Ambattur even walking on the roads in the locality is a nightmare as the roads are filled with potholes and craters, thanks to the constant digging of the roads by the Metrowater board for drainage works and the apathy of the Corporation officials.
Residents of the area said that the drainage work had begun three years ago and is yet to be completed. Motorists find a tough time maneuvering their vehicles. “The deep cuts in the road has made it narrower and creates problem for the office-goers and school children. Particulary, the 6th and 9th streets are very pathetic. Despite our repeated complaints to the Metrowater officials no action has been taken,” says Praveena, a resident of Rajiv Nagar. “We even handed over petitions to the Chief Minister’s cell a week ago, but nothing has been done so far. Officials say that there is delay in allocation of funds as our area has been merged with the Corporation only recently,” Praveena added.
T Ramadoss, secretary, Bharat Ratna Rajiv Nagar Residents Welfare Association said, “The metrowater officials are yet to make the assessment on the flow of water in the area. The pumping station for this purpose is proposed in Korattur. Only when the pumping station gets ready the officials will carry out the actual process of setting the drainage systems.”
“On behalf of the association we have spent more than Rs 15,000 for doing the patch works. Even ambulance and school vans refuse to come to our area due to the bad roads,” he added.
When asked the metro water officials said, “Only 20 percent of the work is remaining. We will complete the work in one or two months. But the Corporation has to to lay the roads.”
