Bengaluru: A deadly pothole claimed the life of a 22-year-old in Kamanahalli main road, who while trying to dodge a pothole was run over by a BMTC bus here on Monday.
Dhilwan, who was working with a security agency was travelling from Jal Vayu Vihar towards Kamanahalli, fell off from his scooter near Anand Sweets, when a BMTC bus (registration number KA 01 F4752) of Hennur depot, ran over him, killing him on the spot.
The Banaswadi traffic police, under whose jurisdiction the accident happened, said that the Bengaluru water supply and sewerage board (BWSSB) was undertaking repair works on that stretch, which is why the road was all dug up.
Speaking to media, DCP East (Traffic) V K Jagadeesh said, "The pothole has been filled and we have asked BWSSB to expedite the work too".
However, a mere patch-up work is where the real problem lies, he added.
According to the report submitted in the Lok Sabha, 178 accidents occurred across the state due to potholes of which 47 incidents claimed the life of the victim, whereas 223 people were injured in Karnataka.
While, the effort of Karnataka High Court to rectify the situation was repeatedly ignored by the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagar Palike (BBMP). A PIL filed in this regard back in 2017 is still being heard at the high court, even after the civic body (BBMP) repeatedly failed to meet the court set deadlines.
According to the BBMP commissioner, it was 'impossible' to make Bengaluru free from potholes. The BBMP claims that it has only 35 potholes left to fill. The court has come down heavily in the past and will hear the case next on December 15.
