New Delhi: The Meghalaya Chief Minister Dr. Mukul M. Sangma on Monday said that a large number of people were affected due to the earthquake and he is personally monitoring the rescue and relief operations across the state.
Speaking exclusively to IBN Live, Sangma said, "The situation is challenging but we are well prepared to deal with any crises. I am in constant touch with the officials engaged in the rescue operations".
On the context of casualties so far, he said, "We are awaiting the correct figures and do not want to quote anything, which will create unnecessary panic among the people."
However, Union Home Ministry sources confirmed that there are six causalities so far and 43 persons have been injured.
"All the agencies including the disaster management teams are already on the affected areas and started their rescue operations," he added.
On Monday morning, a strong earthquake with a magnitude of 6.7 on the Richter scale rocked Eastern and North Eastern part. At least six persons have died and over 100 have been injured in the quake.
The epicentre of the earthquake was at Tamenglong which is located 33 kilometers from Imphal in Manipur.
The quake occurred at 4.35 am at a depth of 17 km below the ground. The epicentre has been located at Long 24.8 Deg North and Lat 93.5 Deg East.
Tremors were felt in the North Eastern and Eastern part of the country including Kolkata, Assam, Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh.
Meanwhile, the Cabinet Secretary P. K. Sinha convened a meeting of the National Crisis Management Committee (NCMC) in the morning.
It was decided that NDRF to send two teams to Imphal immediately for relief and rescue. In addition, one team will be sent to Silchar, Assam.
The centre is also sending a team of engineers from Power Grid Corporation to Imphal to assist the state government in the restoration of power.
"A special team of doctors from Delhi including orthopaedics were already in Imphal. All the affected North Eastern states were assured of necessary help for quick rescue, relief and restoration work," MHA sources said.
