BANGALORE: The declining standards of debate in legislative fora seems to have worried Chief Minister D V Sadananda Gowda, who called upon lawmakers to reverse its course and ensure the working of democratic institutions. “We must not forget that we are accountable to the people who have elected us,” Gowda said.Speaking on the sidelines of a function here on Wednesday, the chief minister expressed dismay at the loss of importance and values in legislative sessions. “A lack of quality in the debates is a disaster,” he averred. He conceded that people are dismayed that elected representatives are not showing any interest in participating in debates on burning issues that the society is facing. Gowda wondered aloud, “Are any of the elected representatives using the library and the research centre inside the legislature?” Theorising that the treasury and members of Opposition parties are responsible for the present situation, Gowda said, “Failure to adhere to norms while conducting business in the house is the root cause for the problem.” Favouring the conduction of legislature session for more days, the chief minister, during his address, said that no political party can be singled out for this lapse. He promised to conduct the legislature session for more days in the future. The Legislative Council Chairman D H Shankaramurthy received a pat on his back for having arranged a one-day training programme for elected representatives. On the occasion, he appealed for cooperation from all members of the house for smooth conduction of the upcoming legislature session, which is scheduled to begin on December 5. “Leaving our egos outside the house will enable meaningful transaction,” CM said, urging the Opposition party members to shun unwanted interruptions.
