KOLLAM: The Kollam Chief Judicial Magistrate extended the police custody of the two Italian marines, arrested in connection with the killing of two Indian fishermen, to five more days on Thursday. The marines, who have already completed 10 days under police custody on Thursday, will thus serve the whole of remand period under custody. The probe team sought CJM A K Gopakumar in the custody application of marines Latorre Massimilano and Salvatore Girone for more days as they have found some discrepancies in the statement’s given by the two marines with those of the Captain and other crew members. The application also stated that since the forensic examination is yet to be done, more interrogation is needed after its results.SIT sources said that the discrepancies found in the statement given by the marines were based on the questionnaire given to them. “We need more explanation from them regarding a few points, which differ in the statements of marines and other crew members. As the marines only know Italian and are not fluent in English, probe becomes more difficult,” the source said. The marines have been moved to the Police Club, Kollam and would be camping at Kollam in the coming days.DEFENCE COUNSEL PLEAThe defence counsel requested that the marines should not be send to a Kerala jail. They have moved a plea to allow the marines to be in judicial custody outside the jail. Court will hear the plea on March 5.Meanwhile, the defence counsel filed an application seeking the inclusion of the director of Forensic Science Laboratory as a respondent in the application requesting the presence of Italian representative while forensic examination is being carried out.On Wednesday, the court had dismissed the plea stating that the director of the FSL, who is the authority in the matter, has not be included a party. The hearing of the application has been posted for Friday.
